Pricing across South African tracker providers varies enough that “how much does a tracker cost” doesn’t have one honest answer — it depends on the provider, the hardware tier, and whether you’re paying monthly or once-off. What’s more useful than a single number is understanding the actual line items that make up the total.
The main cost components
- Installation. A once-off fee to have the device professionally fitted, usually including basic wiring into the vehicle’s electrical system.
- Hardware. Either bundled into the installation fee or charged separately, depending on whether you’re renting the device or buying it outright.
- Monthly subscription. Covers the cellular data connection, monitoring centre access, and app functionality. This is usually the biggest recurring line item.
- SIM or data fees. Sometimes bundled into the subscription, sometimes billed separately — worth confirming which.
What tends to get left out of the sales conversation
- Cancellation and early exit fees, if you cancel before your contract term ends.
- Reinstallation costs if you move the tracker to a new vehicle after selling your current one.
- Optional add-ons like driver behaviour reporting or extra geofences, which can push the “basic” quote higher once you actually want the features that made you consider a tracker in the first place.
Once-off vs monthly: the real comparison
A once-off purchase looks more expensive on day one and cheaper by year two, while a subscription model spreads the cost but can end up higher over several years — the actual crossover point depends entirely on the specific pricing you’re quoted. It’s worth running the maths on your specific quote rather than assuming either model is automatically cheaper; we cover this comparison properly in our once-off vs subscription tracker cost breakdown.
What to actually ask for before comparing quotes
- The total cost over 12, 24 and 36 months — not just the monthly figure.
- Whether the quote includes installation, or whether that’s billed separately.
- What happens, cost-wise, if you sell the vehicle or want to cancel early.
- Whether the device is insurer-approved for your specific policy, since an unapproved tracker at any price doesn’t solve the problem you bought it for.
The cheapest quote on paper isn’t always the cheapest tracker once installation, contract terms and cancellation costs are added in — get the full number before you decide.
The number that matters mostThe advertised monthly fee is rarely the full cost. Installation, SIM data, and contract cancellation terms all affect what you actually pay over a few years — ask for the total, not just the headline rate, before you sign anything.
